Keuffel & Esser Co., Hoboken, New York, sold and manufactured slide rules, drawing instruments and other technical supplies. Established in 1884, sold rules from 1886, began manufacturing their own rules in 1891 and continued until 1976. Over the course of their history Keuffel & Esser became the largest manufacturer of slide rules in the US. In 1967, Keuffel & Esser, commissioned a study of the future. The report predicted that, by the year 2067, Americans would live in domed cities (possibly influenced by Issac Asimov's robot novel Caves of Steel) and watch three-dimensional television. Unfortunately for the company, the report failed to predict that slide rules would be obsolete in less than ten years, replaced by the pocket calculator. By 1976, Keuffel & Esser mothballed its slide rule manufacturing equipment and sent it to the Smithsonian Institution. They transitioned into CAD equipment in the 1980's.
For more detail, dating and related history go to the K&E Catalog Page by Clark McCoy. You can get a K&E Timeline (1881-1975) Wall Poster created by Michael H. Frey for ISRM at Cafepress.

.This gallery begins with the long 16" and 20" slide rules, then continues by model number, sorted by date of manufacturer.

Joseph J. Graf came to the U.S.A. from Germany with his father circa 1888, he was six years old at the time. He began public school but dropped out around sixth grade. He eventually found work with the Deleware and Lackawanna Rialroad (D&L) as a telegrapher, and from that position rose up to become Chief Telegrapher with an office in Scranton, Pennsylvania. During this period in time, radio was invented by Marconi who beleived that radio was usefuk only for communication between ships at sea. Enter Lee De Forest, the self proclaimed "Father of Radio". Dr, De Forest believed that radion communication between land based entities was possible and set about to prove his theory. Joseph became involved in the expirement as the D&L was in close proximity to De Forest's lab in New Jersey. The photo in the newspaper article is Joseph Graf in Binghamton sending a communication to S.S. Stone in Scranton. The May 1, 1914 edition of Telegraph and Telephone Age has this entry: "Mr. Joseph J. Graf has been appointed telegraph, telephone and wireless engineer of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, with Headquarters at Srnton, PA.",

Carolyn (randall) Diviacchi writes: "This slide rule belonged to my father, Edwin Benjamin Randall, Jr. who worked At the National Bureau of Standards, Washington D.C., and then in Gaithersburg, MD. He was trained in organic chemistry at Harvard, '46. He was African American raised in Cambridge, MA by his parents and an only child. He used the slide rules regularly and taught me as well as my sisters how to do simpler calculations with a slide rule. At the National Bureau he worked on setting standards for quality for various government interests including rubber and paper. He once explained to me that he was working on the standards for tire rubber which was I think at the time they were beginning to introduce reinforcing rubber or radial tires. He selected tested and selected papers to be purchased by the U.S. government, which was of course an enormous consumer." K&E N4053-5 20 inch Polyphase Mannhiem - sn771644 (1940)

Clarence H. Koch (1904-1989) was a Golden, Colorado native who worked for many years as an electrical engineer and utility executive. He was employed by the Colorado Central Power Company from 1924 to 1945. After resigning from the power company, he organized the Davison-Koch Furniture Store in Golden, which operated between 1945 and 1950. He was thr District 3 Commissioner (Republican) 1951 to 1959. Koch also raised cattle on his ranch in Mount Vernon Canyon after 1941, and until 1965 when he moved with his family to a ranch at Livermore, north of Fort Collins. He lived there and in Fort Collins until his death. Central Colorado Power Company (1906-1959) was founded in 1906 by Myron T. Herrick. A pioneer in hydroelectric power, Herrick had diverted the Colorado River in 1909, sending it through two and one-third miles of granite to turbines in his company's Shoshone plant. From there he sent transmission lines 150 miles through several forbidding mountain passes to Denver. He also built Barker Dam in Boulder Canyon, a project that took more than 18 months to complete and for which his company had to devise new methods of acetylene welding. It was renamed Colorado Power Company, then was merged with the Public Service Company of Colorado on September 3, 1924,Colorado Power Company and in 1923 served the coal mines of northern Colorado and the towns of Lafayette, Boulder, Longmont, Loveland, Berthoud, Fort Collins, Greeley, Fort Lupton, Brighton, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
1926 Several regional power companies, including Jeffco Power & Light were consolidated to form Colorado Central Power Company. The new company covered Golden, Morrison, Englewood, Littleton, Fort Lupton, Plattevill, Johnstown, Milliken, Hudson, and Keenesburg. The new company's main offices were in Golden, on Washington Avenue. Sometime in the 1960's Colorado Central Power Company was absorb by the Public Service Company of Colorado. According to Joseph L. Soper, who worked at the K&E Salibury plant, K&E made the 4053 from around 1909 to the end of production of slide rules in 1976. The 4053 went through dozens of changes during its lifetime. The rarest of the variants is this 1914 Model 4053-3. In 1913, the 4053-3 had a framed indicator window, which blocked the view of portions of the slide rule when making calculations. K&E fixed this problem by making the "Frameless" indicator. K&E went through the patent process to protect their investment into this innovation. In 1914, K&E produced the "Frameless indicator with metal indicator bars". The metal indicator is marked, "Pat. Appl'd For", as seen in the image. This was followed very shortly after with a "Frameless indicator with plastic indicator bars". The plastic bars were marked, "K&E CO. N.Y. Pat. 8.17.15".

The edge became a 25cm linear scale and did not need the extended hairline.

Worked at Texas Instruments, then as a professor at Clemson University. In 1983 became a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at University of Arizona. John specialized in collecting K&E rules, with a strong interest in Pickett. In 2002, John described how he started with slide rules back in 1960: "I used a K&E 4181-3. We were mandated to use either a 4081-3 or 4181-3 in our freshman slide rule class. I chose the cheaper (very important to a married 18 year old) rule and never regretted it despite the dire predictions from some faculty about dimensional stability and durability." Among John's awards were the 1988 Inventor Award by Semiconductor Research Corp., the 1988 Semiconductor International Technology Achievement Award and the 1991 Arizona Innovator of the Year.

Previous owner: A loaner from a school's Textbook Department. This may very well be during WWII when limited resources made it difficult for individuals to buy slide rule
Gifted by Norma Tanner of Libertyville, Illinois
Norma has been a participant of the ISRM Slide Rule Loaner Program. In addition, she had her own collection that she loaned out to students. This one is part of the collection sent to ISRM. Norma writes: "After teaching math and/or science for 24 years, I am now enjoying retired life. Having been educated at MIchigan State University during a time when using a slide rule was the only technology available for advanced calculations, I decided to create a unit of study for my students that would introduce them to the slide rule. My goals were for students to strengthen their ability to estimate and use scientific notation, as well as to discover the historic significance of the slide rule. While it was hard for them to put aside their electronic calculators, they were fascinated, engaged, and thrilled when they could multiply 2 x 3 and actually get 6 instead of 5.9. In the end my students were happy to be reunited with their calculators, but had a new appreciation for the value of estimating, scientific notation, and accuracy in measurement. Goals met! "

Technical Note: In order for ISRM to determine the manufacturing dates of the 4080 and 4081 slide rules, it is convienient to refer to the catalog pages provided on Clark McCoy's website. These are Clark's descriptions:

The 4081-3 family of slide rules are duplex type of slide rules. Of the catalogs available, the first release was shown in the 1937 catalog and price list. From 1937 through 1947 the laminate covered the entire surface of the rules except for the ends and all printing was on the front and rear surfaces. From 1947 through 1952 the model numbers and other logo type information was engraved on the top edge of the rule. From 1952 through 1972 the top and bottom surfaces of the rules showed some wood with laminate inlayed in it.

This is the second series of slide rules called "Log Log Duplex Trig" (4080-3) and "Log Log Duplex Decitrig" (4081-3). This group was evolved from the 4091-3 family in 1937 and the earlier 4092-3 family of slide rules. The 4081-3 family of slide rules became the main stay for the K&E line of slide rules in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s,

On the right are the scale sets, modified to ISRM convention, where the Front is determined by the A scale. If there is a known date of the slide rules based on an owner's bio, that date is shown.

Note: The 4080-3 and 4081-3 are identical except for the scale graduations of the trig scales. The 4080-3 is divided in degrees and minutes where as the 4081-3 is divided in degrees and decimal degrees.

1937 (4080-3 & 4081-3) Scale sets:

Cont'd Gaining re-admittance to university was challenging for engineering students because Japanese American citizens were banned from any campus that had grants to conduct classified government research. He eventually was admitted to Swarthmore College, a small Quaker liberal arts college with an excellent Engineering Department, graduating in 1951. He continued his studies at MIT, and then went to work in the aerospace industry. Tosh loved helicopters and worked primarily in helicopter rotor design. He worked briefly with Kaig Kurkjian on the HK1 aircraft and worked for Vertol Corporation until it was purchased by Boeing in 1960. He closed out his professional career at Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in Ridley Park, PA. He also had a passion for teaching and taught at Swarthmore College, Drexel University and at Widener University. His daughter, Elizabeth, writes :"I am sure the Pickett was his favorite slide rule. He must have had one at work and one at home because I don't think I ever saw his desk at home with out a yellow slide rule on it." Expanded biography

Original Owner: John Vincent Atanasoff, (1903-1995) Father of the First Digital Computer. The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was the world's first electronic digital computer which was built by John Vincent Atanasoff (Prof. Physics and Mathematics) and Clifford Berry at Iowa State University during 1937-42. It incorporated several major innovations in computing including the use of binary arithmetic, regenerative memory, parallel processing, and separation of memory and computing functions. In an interview between Michael Konshak, the ISRM curator, and John V. Atanasoff II (1927- ), who lives in Boulder, Colorado shared a little known fact. John Junior stated that his father told him that he received his inspiration for the Digital Computer, after trying to make a more accurate slide rule. He first built an analog machine, called the "laplaciometer", that used two long lengths of parallel 35mm photographic film mounted on spools, with images of [at least] the C and D scales that could be rotated independently to perform calculations. He became frustrated with the lack of mechanical stability and thermal expansion of the film that created errors. As an electronic engineer, he then wondered if he could do it electronically. this "Epihany" is the spark (or flash of genius) that determines the origination of any invention and subsequent U.S. Patents.
On October 19, 1973, US Federal Judge Earl R. Larson signed his decision following a lengthy court trial which declared the ENIAC patent of Mauchly and Eckert invalid and named Atanasoff the inventor of the electronic digital computer - the Atanasoff-Berry Computer or the ABC. This scan of one of his three slide rules at ISRM were provided by the Iowa State University Library, References: John Vincent Atanasoff Jr. and Atanasoff Archives.

Gifted by Martha H. Prince in memory of the John Prince Collection, Tuscon, AZ
Jean Jolkovski (1926- ), was issued this slide rule by the U.S. Government in 1948 after serving in WWII, as part of the G.I. Bill while attending Ohio University. Unfortunately it was stolen in 1949, and he hadn't seen it since. In 2010 Martha Prince donated the slide rule, which was part of her late husband, John Prince's extensive collection to ISRM. In the process of doing some restoration, the ISRM curator looked at the sleeve and noticed there was an Amateur 'Ham' Radio call sign W8EGM\A8AGM on the sleeve. The curator, also a Ham KI0CC, discovered that a Jean Jolkovski was residing in Phoenix, AZ and is still involved in Ham radio with a call sign of W4CIH. When contacted, Jean affirmed that it was his. After this was stolen, Jean paid $20 out of his pocket for a new one as the G.I. Bill only issued one/veteran going to college. Jean received a BS in Electrical Eengineering and MSA in Information Technology and had a career Federal Government contract law. Over 50 years in Government contracts for technology and services. Small business a specialty. Public speaker; workshops on "Doing Business with the Government" , "How to write a winning proposal" and related subjects. Hands-on counselor. As of 2014, Jean is 87 and is an active SCORE mentor. He is the vice president of the Quarter Century Wireless Association Chapter 16 - Barry M. Goldwater Arizona Chapter.

Gregory J. Patterson (1935-2014), of Towson, Maryland, obtained this slide rule soon after high school and used it in his career. Greg went to Marquette University in Wisconsin and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Allis-Chalmers out of college, then Boeing where he worked on the Saturn 5 rockets, then Westinghouse for 32 years where he retired in 2000 as the Manager of Manufacturing Engineers. He worked on Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) while at Westinghouse. His name is marked on inside of sleeve flap. He had 5 children. (More info on right...)

Gifted by son Tim Patterson and family.

(Cont'd) His daughter, Catherine McFeeters of Baltimore, Maryland wrote: "My Dad was really smart. Sometimes it seemed like he was a human Wikipedia. He wasn't one who knew a little bit about a lot of things, he was one of those rare people who knew a lot about a lot of things. He was a gentle and thoughtful man who analyzed everything in life. He loved projects. Since his death, I've heard many stories about the projects he worked on with the people he cared about. And when you worked on a project with Greg, it may have taken longer than you thought it should, but once it was done, you knew it was always done the best it could be. His final project was the miniature train route he built around the perimeter of his living room that was suspended 8 feet off the ground. Over a span of about 5 years, he worked on this project sharing his progress with anyone that was willing to take the time to listen. And whether or not you are a train enthusiast, it is easy to see that this a true work of art, just like my Dad's life."

Donated by Vernon Estes, Canyon City, Colorado..
Vern is the founder of Estes Industries who made the first safe black powder rocket motors in 1958 used by members of the newly formed National Association of Rocketry (NAR) . Vern purchased this slide rule in downtown Denver, Colorado in 1948 when he was in his 3rd year at Westminster Union High School. He used it for advanced math classes in high school, then later at Central College in McPherson, Kansas. He later founded Estes Industries which began his career in model rocketry. He says "my trusty slide rule was an indispensible companion". Based on his own experiences, he offered slide rules (see the Pickett 120) in his sales literature (circa 1964) to help young rocketeers (of which the curator of ISRM was one). Vern engraved his name on the slide rule so it would not get mixed up with his brother Earl Estes' slide rule, who bought his at the same time and later used it in his engineering career at Hughes Aircraft.

Goals met! "

This slide rule belonged to Linus Carl Pauling [1901-1994], one of the most influential chemists in history as well as one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. One of only 4 individuals ever to have won solo Nobel Prizes in separate and unrelated fields - for chemistry in 1954, and the Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless campaign against atmospheric nuclear bomb testing in 1962. He found this slide rule when he was 17 while still in high school. When the rightful owner was not found, he carried this with him to Oregon State College and used it until he graduated. See his diary page on the left, dated September 23, 1917. The cursor must have been replaced later as that type was not available until 1935. This slide rule belonged to Merle H. (Mike) Walker. was one of the most important gun and cartridge designers of the 20th Century, and a leading proponent of benchrest shooting. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1934 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mike worked for Remington Arms Company for 37 years, as a lead designer and engineer. While at Remington, he created many of Remington's most popular bolt action rifles. For many years, Mike served as Director of Research and head of the Custom Shop at Remington's, Ilion, NY facility. Mike led the development of many important Remington rifle designs, including the Rem m700, Rem 40X, Rem m721, and Rem m722. Walker held 12 patents from 1945-1972, mostly for trigger designs, and the Remington Stud Driving tool. The History of Remington Firearms by Roy C. Marcot states: "Without a doubt, the Remington Model 700 is the most popular commercial, high-power, bolt-action rifle in the world. The Model 700 is actually a product-improved Model 721 and Model 722 bolt-action rifle, the brain-child of Merle 'Mike' Walker and his Remington design team in the 1940s." Mike is largely credited with the development of the .222 Rem (aka "Triple Deuce") which dominated short-range Benchrest competitions. The B&W photo is from Field and Stream magazine. Mike was one of the "founding fathers" of the International Benchest Shooters (IBS). Mike shot in the 2010 IBS Nationals at age 99 and worked in his shop even at the age of 101. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and the Campfire Club of America, and was credited in Cambridge Whos Who in December 2012. His daughter, Janet Walker DuBane, is a graduate of Cornell University. Max Kozerowitz, PE, purchased this slide rule in 1934 when he enrolled at City College of New York City, and later The Cooper Union in NYC.He also used it later as a weight and balance engineer for Martin Aircraft Company during WWII. He joined the NYC Board of Water and was listed in the city record as a NYC Engineering Inspector on August of 1938. The city record of March 21, 1942 shows Max being promoted from Archetectural daftsman to Assistant Architect with an annual salary of $4500. He worked on dams and tunnels that supply drinking water to the city. The K&E Polyphase was in constant use for construction projects and it was used to pass his Professional Engineer exam in 1949. After he transferred to the NYC planning Commision in 1955, the slide rule came home. Max retired as the Deputy Chief Engineer in 1973.Max gave it to his son, when Stephen Kozerowitz left for college in the fall of 1955. Stephen used the K&E after graduating as an engineer and worlked on the second deck of the George Washington Bridge, the World Trade Center in 1965. By 1970 Stephen went from engineering roles to project and program managemeny and the duplex slide rule was replaced by electronics by 1979.

Nick Kratz writes" This is [part of - see Halden Calculex] the combined surviving collection of my father, R.W. Kratz Jr,( - 2008) and father, R.W. Kratz, Sr.( - 1942)
My grandfather (Sr.) who, amongst other things, was an electrical and HVAC engineer . My father was in International Licensing, and as i recall worked with a company in the UK (unfortunately i don't remember which company, and my father died in 2008) which licensed the Hughes-developed IC and did bring a product to market (4-function, not scientific, so not directly threatening slide rules. This would have been 1972 or thereabouts). I was 16 years old in 1975. I remember my father showing me, maybe a few years prior, how to use a slide rule. This was of course happening as the affordable scientific calculators were rolling out, bringing with them disruptive change. I never did have enough interest to learn the slide rule, with simple battery-operated greater precision at my fingertips. My loss if i survive the end of the world where there is a slide rule but no functioning calculator, though given that I'm having trouble surviving in this world as it is, I'm not particularly concerned about that. ;-) I was amongst the first engineering generation (electrical, in my case) who started out with calculators and never used slide rules."

Owned by Arnold D. Strausman, gifted by his daughter Judith B. King of Miami Shoes, Florida.
Arnold Davidson Straussman (c1908-1983) was an electrical engineer who loved the elegance of math, as well as science and the arts. After graduating from Pratt Institute, NY in 1929, he was employed by the Jersey Central Power and Light Company until 1940. Then later with Ebasco Services headquartered in NY. His daughter, Judith King write: "He was an amazing man, and introduced me to astronomy and Scientific American as soon as I could read. He loved math in its pure forms, but also the practicalities of what you could design and build with it. We designed and built a simple radio together before I was out of grade school. " Note: He is listed in Amatuer Radio Stations of the United States June 30, 1920: Call sign: 2AUH (18 watts), located at 601 Asbury Ave, Asbury Park, NJ. Evidently Arnold was building radios while still in high school.

Gift of Dan Swerdlow, Bethesda, Maryland.
This slide rule was originally manufactured in 1930 with an all-glass cursor, which was very fragile. When the new improved metal framed cursor came out in 1936, it was replaced. Unfortunately, the first celluloid blocks suffered KERCS and 50 years later they crumbled. ISRM restored this slide rule using a Ricoh 'look-a-like' OEM cursor made in Japan in 1960. See the comparison. This cursor may be seen on SIC 153, Lafayette F686, Mocronta 150/157 and many others. It is a compatible swap for all the K&E and Dietzgen 10inch Duplex slide rules including the 20inch duplexes, like the 4081-5. You just have to decide if the Relay/Ricoh bamboo slide rule is more valuable to you than your old mahogany K&E.

K&E 4110 Power Trig Mannheim

ISRM 24.07.04.14

The stated objectives of the inventors in the patent application was to provide a simple looking slide rule with tangent and sine scales of increased range and a new arrangement of the log log scales. The C and D scales have two log cycles while the A and B scales have four log cycles. All scales are on the front of the rule. The Log Log scales are not segmented and related to the A and B scales. Having the Log Log scales unsegmented makes the rule very easy to use. With the rule being longer than standard 10 inch rules the two cycle C and D scales have the resolution of a standard 8" slide rule.description by Clark McCoy

Nicholas James Fotos (1924-1970) family was part of a Greek Community in Annapolis. Additional research revealed that Nick J. Fotos was born August 27, 1924 and had graduated from Annapolis High School in 1941. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. After training in Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida, Nick was sent to Foggia, Italy in 1944 and served as a tail gunner on B17 bombers. Nick Fotos returned from the war and re-matriculated at the University of Maryland to complete his degree. He majored in Physics and Minored in Mathematics and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree. During that time, he met Christine Contos and were married in 1949. Following the war and upon completion of his undergraduate studies at U. of Maryland, Nick became employed as an Engineer-inspector of the sub-structure of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge; later as a physicist with the United States Engineering Experiment Station; then as a vibration engineer with the Bomarc Project of the Westinghouse Air Arm Division. But he decided he wanted a career change and applied and was accepted at the University of Baltimore Law School. He opened his law practice in the late 50s and practiced law through the 1980s and had a solo practice.

Donated By Richard Plastino, Lakewood, Colorado.
Richard Plastino originally used a Post slide rule for his engineering education at the University of Idaho from 1963 to 1967. The Post slide rule came to an unfortunate end after Richard received a grade of "20" on a statics exam and used the slide rule to strike a traffic sign a short distance outside the engineering building. This K&E was the replacement and both it and Richard made it the rest of the way through school with no smashing events. Dick retired in 2008 after serving as Public CWorks Director for the City of Lakewood, Colorado for 28 years.

Gift of Edward T. Wright of Odenton, Maryland.
Edward Wright (on left) received his B.A. with Honors in Mathematics from Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis) in 1968, followed by his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1973. Ed's thesis was on compact Kahler manifolds that admit Killing vector fields. After graduate school Dr. Wright was a visiting assistant professor at Notre Dame for one school year, then worked as an (applied) mathematician for the Department of Defense for 39 years. Ed retired 2014. Ed writes: "The only time I ever used a slide rule was in high school physics (1963/64). I started collecting them off of Ebay in the 2004/5 time period. I continue to marvel at how much was accomplished with these instruments. I am in the process of down sizing the modest collection that I have, and wanted them to go some place that will preserve this part of the technology."

Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr. (1927-2004), also known as Gordon Cooper, was an American aeronautical engineer, test pilot and one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the United States. Cooper piloted the longest and final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. The B&W NASA photo is from May 16, 1963, just after the successful recovery of the Mercury Faith-7 mission. He was the first American to sleep in space during that 34-hour mission and was the last American to be launched alone to conduct an entirely solo orbital mission. In 1965, Cooper flew as command pilot of Gemini 5.
