This gallery is focused on the varieties of Concise circular slide rules and the many variants of promotional specimens. Concise is manufactured by K.K. Konsaisu of Tokyo, Japan, and is the only manufacturer still producing and marketing new slide rules that have the classic scales. The advantage of circular slide rules, is that the dimensions can be small enough to fit in your shirt pocket, yet have the scale resolution of a standard linear slide rule. Construction is simple as the only only fastener is the single screw or rivet at the center of the disk. Sama and Etani out of Groton, Massachusettes designed a series of tables that are inserts in a rectangular stock. There is also one model with an addiator on the reverse side. Note that Scientific Instruments rebranded Concise circular slide rules are moved into the SIC gallery, to minimize maintenance errors.

Michael P. Maloney finished pre-engineering at Niagara University in 1965 and graduated as an Electrical Engineer in 1968 from the University of Detroit. He also attended George Washington University and received a Master Degree in Engineering Management in 1978. After graduating from the University of Detroit, he joined the Department of Defense (DoD) and retired as a Technical Director in 1997. While working for the DoD, Mr. Maloney had three tours in Europe totaling 13 years. Mr. Maloney used the ten different types of slide rules or slide charts in the design, development, installation and maintenance of communication and radar systems. These have been donated to ISRM. Mike writes: "Of particular interest to me is the shirt pocket SRL circular slide rule and my white plastic 'nerd pack' (shirt pocket protector). These two items traveled with me on all my TDYs (business trip) while stationed in Europe during the 'Cold War'." Upon retiring from the DoD Mr. Maloney worked for Raytheon, Applied Signal Technology, Conquest, Boeing and Hayden Software Consulting. Mr. Maloney has five patents and enjoys wood working, traveling, reading and developing algorithms for solving cryptograms.

Jim Rodgers (1929-2012) used this slide rule (and others found within ISRM) during his career. He was a Naval Aviator and had training at the the Nuclear Weapons Training Center - Atlantic (c1968). He later resided in Boulder, Colorado. He was married to Ceil Rodgers for 63 years and had four children, Jim, Susan, Cathy and Stephen, and eight grandchildren. An avid reader, progressive thinker, political junkie, problem solver and perpetual optimist, Jim was loved and admired by everyone who knew him. Jim donated his body to science.

Brian C. Cunningham (1935-2013)
Brian was born in Port Pine, South Australia, Australia. His education commenced there and continued at the South Australian School of Mines where he gained his Diploma in Mining & Metallurgy. He became a Student Member of the Australian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy rising to a Fellow member. Brian started his career as a Metallurgical Cadet at the B.H.A.S. (Broken Hill Associated Smelters) in Port Pirie. He transferred to Hamersley Iron in Perth, Western Australia, the subsidiary company of Conzinc Rio Tinto Aus. where he became an Executive Officer of the Hamersley Iron Group. In Brian's studies and work his slide rules where used extensively.

Zdenka used this slide rule during her career as a petroleum engineer. She attended high school in Czechoslovakia. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (1975) and later became a Petroleum Engineer for Shell Canada Limited and was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. One of her many papers, published in 1996 by the journal 'SPE Reservoir Engineering', was Composition and Phase Changes in Testing and Producing Retrograde Gas Wells and she wrote Spectroscopic and Magnetic Resonance Studies of Aromatic Molecules published by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Pennsylvania, 1975.

Raymond Anthony Heit (1957-2003) earned a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati, and was a Registered Civil Engineer in Ohio and Texas and a Licensed Surveyor in Ohio. Raymond had a creative and productive career at Factory Mutual, Inc., Union Carbide, Inc, and Kellog-Brown & Root, Inc. He also collected slide rules and slide charts, which now reside in the ISRM archives.

Promotional for AVCO - Everett Research Laboratory of Everett, Mass. As of 1967, it was wholly-owned subsidiary of Avco Corporation of Greenwich, Conn.It did basic and applied research in re-entry physics, space science and technology, optics and isotopes research, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, medical products, high power gas lasers, and laser metalworkers.
This specimen belonged to Richard Levy PhD.

Richard Levy 1932 - 2017 was born in London, and as a child, he was evacuated to Montreal to escape the Blitz during the WWII, He returned to London in 1943 to complete his schooling and graduated from Cambridge with a BA in Math. He married Midge in 1955, and then moved to the USA. He received a Fellowship at Princeton University and earned a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. During this time he made extensive use of his slide rules. He returned to Montreal to begin his career at Canadair, and subsequently moved to Boston where he worked for AVCO during the 1960s and 1970s. At AVCO he began work on laser applications, and with Sargent Janes, coauthored a number of patents regarding their use in the separation of isotopes which has important applications in the production of nuclear energy. This accomplishment led to the formation of a joint venture between Avco and Exxon, and in 1974 he moved to Seattle to begin work with this new entity. He left corporate life in 1980, retiring in Seattle. He spent retirement consulting and studying issues such as the Allies decision not to bomb the rail lines leading to Auschwitz. He enjoyed the outdoors, the symphony and the opera, and was proud of his heritage.

Bruce writes: "I am not a slide rule expert. My father gave me my first calculator in my sixth grade (1978), and I never had to really learn the slide rule. Attempts to teach me happened, but never stuck well. My father (still) teaches EE at Santa Clara University at age 88, I graduated with a ME degree in 1987. So, although I was on the cusp of the technology change, slide rules still fascinate me. Your ISRM web site has been a valuable resource every time I happen to find a slide rule that is in need of rescue and a new caring home. Thank you for providing such a great source of information.
