| Albert Nestler AG, a German firm located in Lahr, Germany and founded by Albert Nestler. His great grandson, Jürgen Nestler, in Hausach, Germany, is a major contributor to this gallery with many donations of slide rules from when the factory closed in 1972. Nestler was also an OEM supplier to United States slide rule companies like Weber and Staedtler. Nestler contracted with the Japanese firm Uchida Yoko to make plastic slide rules in the later years and even entered the electronic 'slide rule' calculator market for a brief period. Nestler Mannheim - c1917 Made in Germany, English text Front Scale 25cm // A [ B, C ] D || 10.75in Back Scale [ S, ST, T] Slide Rule Data Slips Well Scale 21 inch depth scale Donated by Marsha Boulton, UK. This slide rule was used by her great grandfather, Thomas Boulton, who worked in the UK PORTSMOUTH DOCKYARD and was second in command as a shipwright from 1900 to 1946. Born around 1885? in Portsmouth and joined Portsmouth Dockyard as an apprentice 1903, achieving master shipwright 1917. During this time he undertook refurbishment of HMS Victory (Nelsons flagship and still the oldest commissioned warship in the World) and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Promoted to second in command in the historic Portsmouth dockyard and before WWII was designing and building warships including HMS Amphion in 1935. This was sold to the Aussies and sunk by the Japanese in 1942 having been renamed Canberra. Died in 1947 Marsha has two letters from the Admiralty, from 1944, thanking Thomas Boulton for his zeal in the war effort and commiserations to her great gran, the widow on his death. | ||
