This gallery is dedicated to slide rules and manufacturers located within the U.S.A. that do not have their own gallery. You will note that many United States Companies OEM'd some of their slide rule models from other countries. This is not a practice employed by the other countries themselves (i.e. buying from the USA and put their name on them). It was probably less from national pride as it was a method of the United States in helping to rebuild European and Japanese economies after WWII and in some cases, like Post and Dietzgen, to renew their relationships as it was before the war.
Manufacturers/Brands Represented in this gallery:
Beta Enterprises, Bill-Mar, Brown, Charles Bruning, Charvoz-Roos, Climatemaker, C-Thru, Dieterich-Post, Disney, Easterly, Empire Educational Instruments Inc, EngineeringSales, Favor-Ruhl, Foxboro, Fullerton, Gerber, Gisholt, Globemaster, GraphicCalculator, Guedon, Henschel, Indeco, Kudlaty, Lakeside, Lietz Master, Mead, Nobema, Novotni, Small, Prestige, SRandSECO, Tomlinson, Tru-Bilt, USBlue, Weber, and various promo slide rules at bottom of gallery.

More United States manufactured slide rules may be found in the Circular, Acu-Math, Dietzgen, Lawrence, K&E, Post, Pickett, Richardson, and Sterling galleries. Slide rules branded for USA companies by Relay/Ricoh may be found in that gallery, along with related USA made slide rules under their brands, Like ALVIN, Lafayette, etc.

The Roos Company, Charvoz-Roos Corporation.

1954 1970
Charvoz-Roos Corporation, 50 Colfax Avenue, Clifton, New Jersey
Charvoz-Roos - A U.S. distributor of drafting and engineering supplies based at one time in 50 Colfax Ave, Clifton, New Jersey, that sold Charvoz-Roos branded slide rules. In November, 1939, Charvoz, Inc., formed at 185 Hackensack Street in East Rutherford, NJ. as a joint venture between Andre Charvoz, president of Manufacture Francais de Compas of Ligney-en-Barre, France, and Samuel Sanders of Teaneck, N.J., president of L. Oppleman, Inc. The Roos Company of 280 Madison Ave., New York, was a partnership between Andre and Angele Charvoz, and Abel and Ethel R. Gottheimer, that was created (c1941) to manufacture painted wood and laminated wood slide rules in the United States presumably to replace foreign imports of slide rules during WWII. It is possible that parts of the Charvoz-Roos early slide rules were supplied by the U.S. slide rule manufacturer Acu-Rule as many parts are identical with other brands of the time. Roos began distributing Charvoz drafting supplies by 1945. After the war, Roos Company merged with Charvoz Inc. into Charvoz-Roos Corporation on June 14, 1946 and began importing re-branded Relay/Ricoh slide rules from "Occupied Japan". The manufacturing plant in East Rutherford, New Jersey was sold in 1953 and the Charvoz-Roos Manufacturing Company was in receivership. Around 1954 the company became just Charvoz, and slide rules were imported from the German company Aristo. Early Roos and Charvoz-Roos slide rules were identical to Post 1442, 1447-D, 1452-D, 1462 and Henschel 2020. A Charvoz-Roos PSR-200 is identical to a Relay 403 and an Aristo 909 is branded with just 'Charvoz'. See the Aristo page for more Charvoz branded slide rules

C-Thru Ruler Company

The C-Thru Ruler Company was founded in 1939 in Bloomfield, Connecticut and specialized in transparent plastic rulers and templates.
They designed a line of inexpensive (value-priced) folded sheet (film) printed plastic slide rules.
Their market continues in the modern era and have products in stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Generic slide rules made by the Graphic Calculator Co, are very similar to the C-Thru designs and constructions.

Dieterich-Post Co. (DIEPO)

Formed in 1917 by James W. Dieterich (abt 1889 - died?) and Rudolph Post.
Historical background notes: In 1911, James W. Dieterich, had worked his way up to blueprint foreman at B.L. Makepeace Co., then went west to land a job as a salesman with the K&E branch in San Francisco. Jacob and Charles Bruning, in Chicago, bought out W. B. Huey's interest in American Blueprint Co. in 1914. After the America Blueprint Co. buyout, W.B. Huey and A.W. Huey acquire the coating rights to Bruning products and start the Huey Company in 1915. By 1917, Rudolph Post, nephew of Charles Bruning, recruited Jim Dieterich from K&E and obtained financing for a blueprint operation from his uncle. Later in the year, the two buy out Bruning's interest and form Dieterich-Post Company. Slide rules were a monor part of the office supply business and DIEPO OEM'd from other companies like Pickett & Eckel, Inc in Chicago, Charles Bruning in California and Albert Nestler in Germany. On Wednesday, October 22, 1947, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for DIEPO by Dieterich-Post Company, San Francisco. The USPTO has given the DIEPO trademark serial number of 71538617. The federal status of this trademark filing expired 11/3/1992.
The Dieterich-Post Company was still operating in Monterey Park, California in 2010. The Dieterich-Post website, at the time, stated that 2010 is its 93rd year of doing business. DIEPO continued a relationship with Charles Bruning Co. (C.B.Co.) evidenced by a 1950's rebranded slide rule made by C.B.Co. By 2011 Dieterich-Post Co. was acquired by American Reprographics Co and all historical information about Dieterich-Post had been deleted from its website.

ISRM used the Wayback Machine to find historical background from the image of the 1998 www.dieterich-post.com website
The founders of our Company, James Dieterich, Sr. and Rudolf Post, began operations in 1917, with a slogan that we still believe in and maintain today, "Builders of Goodwill."
With that slogan, Mr. Dieterich and Mr. Post launched what has become the finest distributor of drafting and engineering supplies in all the United States. We hope you too will realize the contribution we make to all facets of the drafting, engineering, architectural, reprographics, desktop publishing, and large format printing industries.
Mr. Dieterich, Sr. was born in South Portland, Maine, reared in Boston, and began his career at the age 14 as an errand boy in the blueprint shop run by Bertrand L. Makepeace. It was there that he met Nellie E. Wilson (abt 1918-?), the bookkeeper, who later became Mrs. Dieterich. From the 1940 census, they had two sons James W. Dieterich (b1918) and Robert E. Dieterich (b1922) and lived in Contra Costa, California .
In her memoirs, Nell recalls that, prior to their meeting, Jim's principal ambition in those early boston days was to become a billiards champion(in the footsteps of Willie Hoppe). Thus, to polish his craft and to achieve this goal, he spent most of his evenings in a local pool hall. Obviously, she changed that!
Jim came West in 1910, stopping first to visit with a cousin in Clancy, Montana. Moving on to San Francisco, he became a traveling salesman, then assistant manager for Keuffel & Esser. After a number of years at K & E, he went to work for Victor Post and his brother, Rudolph, who ran the San Francisco branch of the Chicago-based Frederick Post Company. In 1917 Rudolph and Jim bought out Victor's share of the firm, and the Dieterich-Post Company was formed.

Foxboro

The Foxboro Comapany, Foxboro, Massachussettes. USA, developed a series of slide rules to assist gas engineers in sizing control valves and in performing calculations relating to orifice meters. These devices were not widely used in gas distribution except for the design of those city gate stations using orifice meter runs to measure the flow of gas. Ref: natgasedu.com

Sizing control valves usually involved solving for the valve's Cv based on flow rate, flowing temperature, specific gravity, and upstream and downstream pressures. The most common orifice meter calculation involved solving for the "beta ratio" or "beta" (the ratio between the diameter of the orifice and the inside diameter of the meter run pipe, or "d/D") given the maximum flow, flowing temperature, specific gravity of the gas, static pressure and line size of the run.
Given the small size of the slide rules, these devices were intended to be more portable than precise. If more accurate answers were required, the user was referred to the companion book "Principles and Practice of Flow Meter Engineering" by L. K. Spink.
The slide rule above shows sides for both English (red or maroon) and Metric (blue) units. Donated By Carlee Heit, Houston Texas, in Memory of her husband Ray Heit

This slide rule belonged to Pamela Lanier Wolfe Browne (1948 - ). In 1966, she began working as a secretary for the Onondaga County Department of Transportation, Division of Engineering, Syracuse, NY. She studied drafting in her spare time and on April 26, 1969 she took the Engineering Aid I civil examination. When she received her grade she was informed that she was the first woman in NY State to pass the exam and fill the position. On October 24, 1970 she passed the Engineering Aid II exam. She used this slide rule 1969-1971 while working on highway projects in the office. After much pleading with her boss, the Transportation Commissioner, he finally permitted her to work in the field with fellow male engineers conducting traffic counts.
Note: Pamela is the widow of Harry Edson Browne (1933-2006). They were married in 1985. Harry Browne was an inspirational speaker who wrote 19 books that sold more than 2 million copies. In 1996 and 2000 he was the nominee of the Libertarian Party for President of the United States.

Mr. Katzenmair received this information from someone acquianted with the owners of INDECO, who advised him that the owner had spent all of his wife's money in promoting this rule without success and had finally given up making them." Note on Instruction sheet: "A KEY LINE EXCLUSIVE IMPORT - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - SOLE IMPORTER AND DISTRIBUTOR" Obviously Key Line was not the sole importer of Concise slide rules, but maybe at the beginning, they tried. The first sheet of the manual is titled "Key Lines's Concise Circular Slide Rule". The manual is a very early two-sided instruction sheet, folded in 3rds.

Mead Corporation, Hulman Building, Dayton, Ohio. In 1846, Daniel Mead founded the Mead Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. The firm originally manufactured paper, but the company dramatically expanded its product line during the twentieth century. By the time of Daniel Mead's death in 1891, the Mead Corporation was one of the largest paper producers in the United States, with paper mills in Kingsport, Tennessee, Brunswick, Georgia, and Escanaba, Michigan, as well as several plants in Ohio. More Mead Corp. History. During the 1980s, a national recession during the 1980s caused the company to sell off many of its affiliated industries and streamlined its products and services. The company primarily manufactured paper and continued to participate in the electronic storage industry. The Mead Corporation is currently known as MeadWestvaco.

Slide Rule and Scale Engineering, CO. (1930-1950)
Laporte, Indiana, New Carlisle, Indiana and Mt. Olive, Illinois

Slide Rule & Scale Engineering CO. Inc - A US slide rule manufacturer was founded by George L. Lockhart in Laporte, Indiana in 1930, and later New Carlisle, Indiana. SR&SE made custom slide wood slide rules, such as the Concrete Quantity Calculator, as well as a standard Mannheim with A-B-C-D-K & L scales. Rules were manufactured using magnolia wood, finished white with an Ethyl-Cellulose base, then printed. A transparent lacquer coating was then applied to protect the printing. In 1945 a facility was built in Mt. Olive, Illinois. On February 14, 1947 the biggest fire in Mt. Olive history destroyed part of the factory. Production resumed in remaining buildings. On April 14, 1950 the company was declared bankrupt. Nicholas Muschong, a Vice president of Acu-rule, filed to do business in Illinois, and may have acquired the assets and copyrights. Similar in design and construction to Lawrence Engineering Services and Festus (Later Acu-Rule) Manufacturing. Other calculator models advertised in a 1940 flyer were Concrete Block and Mortar, Brick and Hollow Tile, Lumber, and Galvanized Sheet Steel Weight.
