Aristo was a slide rule manufacturer since 1872. Dennert & Pape was founded by Johann Dennert & Martin Pape, in Hamburg, Germany, and continued under that name until 1936. D&P were the first to laminate and engrave celluloid on boxwood wood slide rules in 1886. Mahogany was used after 1888 and in 1902 started producing slide rules using the System Rietz scales designed by Max Rietz. In 1924 D&P introduced the System Darmstadt slide rule, based on the scales set designed by Prof. Dr. Alwin Walther and began using 'DUPA' as a trademark from 1924 to 1936. All plastic slide rules, using Astrolon for the stock and Plexiglas for the cursor, wereintroduced in 1936 using the trademark 'Aristo'. D&P officially became Aristo as a company in 1948 when they introduced all-plastic Duplex slide rules and discontinued mahogany wood models. Aristo stayed in the slide rule business until the end of 1978, a run of 106 years. Aristo was one of the most important slide rule manufacturers world wide.

Roman Russek was known for his wide knowledge of power cables and, in later years, for his expertise the transfer of technology within international joint ventures. During WWII, as a teenager he was forced to work for the German occupation as a translator. By the close of WWII Roman was a member of the Polish Army under British command. With Communism descending on his homeland his left to study in Britain where he earned engineering degrees from Heriot Watt University (Edinburgh) and London University. Continued on right.

Cont'd.: By 1949 he was a Scientific Officer in the Wood Lane Research Laboratories of British Insulated Callenders Cables in London. There he was assigned to teams studying the mechanical behavior of aluminum sheaths, electrical characteristics of oil impregnated paper as well as assisting in the development of flexible joints for submarine cables destined to be used in the HVDC link between North and South Island in New Zealand. As Design Engineer and then Department Manager Roman traveled widely within Canada and internationally representing CWC in many negotiations and discussions with customers and associated firms. He was fluent in five languages. Later as Vice-President Technical Services Roman spent another 14 years transferring technology from the domestic company to the many fledgling associate companies in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Spain, Brazil. South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand, Australia and Iran. Roman and his wife Shiela spent much of their retirement years traveling around the world.

Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep. During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings. This slide rule was obtained during college to compliment his Aristo 0970 Multilog.

John used this Aristo slide rule throughout high-school and then at College (Imperial, London). He graduated in 1972 and joined the BBC as a trainee in Designs Department. In 1973 he encountered the HP35 (200 at that time), which marked the end of his slide-rule days, but he kept his slide rule in safe keeping. John's BBC career was spent mainly in R&D, developing FM, TV and digital transmission equipment He retired from the BBC World Service in 2007 ("Project Director, Digital Radio").

Donated by Henry (Hank) Benoit, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
This slide rule was obtained before starting college. See Hank's other personal slide rule, the Faber-Castell 989 Complex Slide Rule, in the Faber-Castell Gallery.
